Appearance[]

A vast hall, stretching beyond what one could see with one look. The entire hall is engulfed within a background like an overflowing sea of blood.

Description[]

The Killing Fields is a training location that one can access on any island in the Virtual Universe. The only location seen in Swallowed Star is on Black Dragon Mountain Island.

Since it is owned by the Virtual Universe Company, the Killing Fields are very versatile, allowing a cultivator to completely customize any opponent or combat situation, including group battles, one-on-one, battling against much higher-leveled opponents, or fighting extremely rare opponents like a Space Beast. However, this is not the true benefit of the Killing Fields. With the ability to customize any opponent, one can face oneself, just with more combat experience and with better comprehension of one's combat techniques! This essentially gives the effect of a teacher, which contributes to the high cost. Many powerful beings in the Original Universe use the Killing Fields in this manner, absorbing experience and increasing their technique comprehension.

The Killing Fields can be divided into three main areas; the Lobby, the Slaughter Space, and the Battle Space.

Lobby[]

The Lobby (大厅(dàtīng), lit. Lobby/Lounge/Hall) of the Killing Fields is incredibly spacious, with meeting spaces, introductory screens, as well as food and drink. Those who frequent the Killing Fields tend to make friends with each other, since anyone with the funds to spend that much time there generally is either individually wealthy or comes from a large background, making them worth befriending. Since it is in the Virtual Universe and is not meant as an area for combat or training, everyone is limited to an Apprentice Level 4 body[3] (Stellar Level 4 body in the donghua[4]).

Slaughter Space[]

The Slaughter Space (杀戮空间(shālù kōngjiān), lit. Slaughter/Massacre Space) of the Killing Fields is a personal space for each user. One enters it by following one of the pathways at the edge of the Lobby, and after entering it, the space around the user changes, showing a vast and spacious area. The user can customize the location (to make a desert, ocean, mountain range, etc.) to their preference, as well as one's equipment and their opponent. Both the basic use of fighting a customized opponent and using the Killing Fields as a teacher are performed in the Slaughter Space. It can be considered an elite training tool.

Battle Space[]

The Battle Space (决战空间(juézhàn kōngjiān), lit. Decisive Battle/Duel Space) is where real warriors could battle against each other[5]. The battles take place in a black metal arena about 10 kilometers long and 10 kilometers wide, located on an incredibly vast grassy field[6]. Rather than simulating a custom opponent based on memory or desire, the Battle Space allows one to fight an agreed opponent. The cost is 1/10th that of the Slaughter Space, which makes sense due to the lack of customization and teacher aspect. If one wanted to battle they would first have to send out a request and invite the opponent to battle. As one wins more battles, their rankings increase, making them more appealing to stronger opponents. As one is facing an actual opponent rather than a simulation, the battles can be more stimulating and provide unexpected opportunities for fine-tuning one's combat skill. One can spend money to spectate battles; the cost increases with both the number of spectators and the level of the combatants. Typically, higher-level organizations will send members to look for young geniuses to add to their organizations[6].

Despite being a one-on-one battle arena, since it takes place in the Virtual Universe it does not provide the true life-or-death pressure of real combat, making it close to impossible for one to achieve fundamental breakthroughs in their strength[7]. The battles tend to be quick, likely due to it being difficult to find truly evenly-matched opponents, and the willingness of combatants to take risks that they wouldn't take in real life.
