Description[]
Willpower or Will (意志, lit. Will, sometimes seen coupled with Consciousness as 意志意识, lit. Will Consciousness, as 精神意志, lit. Spiritual Will, or 心灵意志, lit. Mind/Soul Will), is a mental component of a cultivator's strength. Willpower is important to both Spirit Masters and Warriors. For Warriors, willpower (along with Consciousness strength) helps them evolve and breakthrough[1], contributes to both their offense and defense, and is even a component of Domain and associated techniques[2]. For Spirit Masters, willpower commands their consciousness[3], and consciousness condenses and strengthens the cultivator's Spirit Energy[4]. Willpower helps any cultivator defend against Soul Attacks and Illusion Attacks[5], but if a cultivator has strong hatred, that will prevent their willpower from properly defending them from illusions[3].
Willpower can be considered one of the 3 major aspects of a cultivator[6].
Willpower Qualities[]
Willpower grows with a fighter; as one comprehends more of the Original Laws, their willpower increases along with their strength. There is a standard level of willpower that can be expected at different levels of cultivation, but specific training[7] and life experiences[8] can increase one's willpower. This means that an Apprentice Level cultivator, with sufficient background, training, and/or experiences, could have willpower equal to that of a World Master[3]! Once one breaks through to Immortal, their willpower is part of their body[9], fused with their Immortal Energy; thus willpower can be considered one of the main aspects of becoming Immortal[10]. The Virtual Universe Company tests willpower (as well as Consciousness) through the Fantasy Ocean[10]. Willpower and consciousness strength are the mental strength of a cultivator; this means that even if one is battling on the Tong Tian Bridge[11], World of Glory[12], Sky Mountain[13], or simply existing in the Virtual Universe[9], their willpower and consciousness strength will still translate if they wish to impose it! Certain species have higher willpower and higher potential in training willpower, such as Earthlings[14], Golden Horned Beasts[15], and Sector Beasts[16].
While willpower can contribute to the strength of soul attacks, any creature with a mind possesses will[17], and thus can train and be affected by willpower (unlike the Mosha Clan's immunity to and inability to perform soul attacks). Strong willpower also increases one's processing speed and ability, increasing the effectiveness of their training. The importance of willpower increases as cultivators get stronger. While it can be felt even by cultivators below Planetary Level[18], it is not typically seen as important to their overall strength. Before becoming Immortal, its influence can mostly be seen in the ability of higher-tiered cultivators to instantly suppress lower-tiered ones (for example, a World Master's willpower can knock a Universe Level cultivator unconscious), as well as the ability to resist Illusion Attacks.
For Immortals, on the other hand, willpower determines the level of consciousness they can maintain as their Divine Body is destroyed, allowing them precious moments to self-destruct rather than possibly be soul-controlled[19]. The willpower of Universe Overlords is one of the attributes that makes them more than just a strong Universe Venerable[20]. As their Divine Power increases, their Consciousness increases, providing further assistance to their willpower; this meant that it was impossible for a World Master to have willpower that rivaled a Universe Master, even though they could have willpower superior to Universe Venerables[21]. When one's willpower increases to a sufficient level, it can increase the efficiency with which they can transform their Divine Power when they are making their fundamental breakthroughs to Universe Venerable, Universe Master, and True God[22].
True God and Beyond[]
Once one becomes a True God, their body changes from being an Immortal Energy lifeform to their original form. This meant that their willpower was then separated from their body. However, if they trained in willpower techniques, their will would merge with their Divine Body, meaning it would remain even after their death! This willpower can attack minds that do not have adequate strength, creating openings in battle; this is the primary function of the Ancient God Eye. This remaining willpower can also convey messages, through spoken or written word, transcending language barriers. When a cultivator breaks through to True God, willpower is used to help create their Miniature Universe, and it can be used to defend the origin of their Miniature Universe. Willpower also aids in creating and controlling a stronger body, whether using a body technique[23], or when refining their body[24]. At the Primal Chaos Sovereign level, willpower dictates how effectively a cultivator can use the Reincarnation Secret Method[25].
Due to the difficulty of cultivation, the True Gods of the Original Universe and Universe Ocean have much stronger willpower than the True Gods of the Continent of Origin[26].
Training Willpower[]
Willpower, unlike Consciousness, is not directly tied to soul strength, and thus is not necessarily trained when one is training their soul. Since willpower is tied to one's mental and internal strength, persevering through painful and difficult times strengthens one's will, albeit in a primitive way. Fighting through life-or-death situations is another method, as is mental state training. Certain methods of training one's soul (such as the Devil's Voice God General Inheritance) can train willpower due to their constant testing of the cultivator's ability to endure pain. Another very effective method is enduring direct willpower attacks; through this method, great beings in Universe Ocean train their willpower at the Black-Striped Stone Pillars.
Although willpower is immaterial, and thus most can only use willpower in primitive, basic ways, if one had sufficient willpower they could train in willpower techniques.
Willpower Techniques[]
While willpower can show similarities to Spirit Energy, techniques that utilize it, such as Lie Yuan Technique, are completely different from Soul Attack techniques like Soul Cutter. Unlike Soul Attacks, even True God Palace Treasures cannot defend against willpower techniques[27]. Willpower techniques, unlike Burning Divine Power Secret Techniques, could only be fully comprehended, and thus created, by those who mastered the Law of Chaos, which meant they would have to be at least a Saint[28]. Despite this, those below Saint could still practice these techniques if they had sufficient willpower strength. Willpower techniques generally have a willpower-training component to help cultivators strengthen their willpower.
Since most cultivators do not train specifically in willpower (as the benefits are not immediately obvious), those with willpower techniques can completely change the tides of battles between the strong. Willpower techniques can knock opponents unconscious who otherwise have incredible willpower and Consciousness strength, making them defenseless. They can be used to affect entire groups or focused on an individual enemy to remove them from the battle.
Willpower Techniques[]
- Divine Eye Secret Technique[28] (Requires Void True God willpower)
- Lie Yuan Technique[29] (Requires Saint willpower)
- Nightmare Technique[30]
Arcana[]
Certain Arcana can affect willpower, either by strengthening the user's willpower, launching a willpower attack, or by weakening their opponent's. Like willpower techniques, Arcana that affect willpower can be incredibly destructive in a battle between the strong. Some Arcana also have willpower requirements before they recognize a cultivator as their master.
Arcana that Affect Willpower[]
- Ancient God Eye[31] (launches willpower attack)
- Black Prison Tower[32] (attacks willpower)
- Blood Sea Devil Armor[33] (launches willpower attack)
- Crazy Devil Extermination Godly Armor[34] (launches willpower attack, also affects the user's willpower)
Arcana with Willpower Requirements[]
- Black Prison Tower[35] (Universe Master must have True God willpower)
- Ice Cliff Fortress[36] (Universe Master must have True God willpower)
- Star Tower[35] (World Master must have Pinnacle Universe Venerable willpower)
- White Wings[37] (World Master must have Universe Venerable willpower; Immortal must have Universe Master willpower; Universe Venerable must have True God willpower)
- Yan Jun Rod[35] (Universe Master must have Pinnacle Universe Master willpower; True God must have Pinnacle True God willpower)
